Fistful of Mercy puts the 'super' in supergroup

The first time Joseph Arthur heard a playback of one of the songs by his new group Fistful of Mercy, he was taken aback.

“I heard the harmonies come back and I felt like, ‘Wow, this is special, this is just beyond the sum of its parts,’ ’’ he says on the phone from Los Angeles.

Considering the parts are the well-regarded singer-songwriter himself, folk-soul rocker Ben Harper, and Dhani Harrison, son of the late George Harrison, and that the trio wrote and recorded its debut, “As I Call You Down,’’ in three days, that assessment was happy surprise.

Especially since Arthur and Harrison were total strangers, meeting for the first time in the studio through mutual friend Harper. The trio play a sold-out show at the Somerville Theatre this Thursday. more»

Dhani Harrison on Good Bacon, Good Skating, and Good Label Deals

​Yesterday I caught up with Dhani Harrison, the renaissance man who studied at Brown, has worked for Formula One, and manages the musical affairs of his late father, the Beatle George Harrison. He's coming to Showbox at the Market with his new band, Fistful of Mercy (featuring Ben Harper and Joseph Arthur) for a sold-out show on Nov. 9. I've got more of our chat coming up next week, but for now, here's some of what Harrison and I talked about over Breakfast (at 1 p.m.).

Hey, Dhani, what's going on?

I'm just sitting in a diner in Los Angeles because my house is full of crazy people and my office is full of crazy people. It's actually most pleasant, my favorite place, called The Snug Harbor. It's this lovely little '50s diner that I go to.

Do you dip your sausages in syrup?

No, actually, I'm a big fan of a good English breakfast, the whole fryer kind of thing.

Fistful of Mercy makes friends in San Francisco (11/11)

When a band opens up with a song called “I Don’t Want to Waste Your Time”, you normally become a little cautious. When that band has Ben fucking Harper in it, there’s nothing to worry about.

That is, at least, what everyone at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall discovered Thursday night. Harper’s newest project Fistful of Mercy, an acoustic rock trio with singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur and Dhani Harrison (George’s son), has no business being as good as it was after less than a year in existence.

After the crowd frustratingly chattered over a melancholy opening set by Them Crooked Vultures/Queens of the Stone Age collaborator Alain Johannes, FoM came out to a huge ovation, and the love remained throughout the evening. more»
