DEC 29 2009Resolution
res-o-lu-tion
–noun [rez-uh-loo-shuh n]
- a formal expression of opinion or intention made, usually after voting, by a formal organization, a legislature, a club, or other group. Compare CONCURRENT RESOLUTION, JOINT RESOLUTION.
- a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.
- the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc.
- the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose.
- the act or process of resolving or separating into constituent or elementary parts.
- the resulting state.
- Optics. the act, process, or capability of distinguishing between two separate but adjacent objects or sources of light or between two nearly equal wavelengths.
MY RESOLUTION FOR 2010 is to convince the NBA to stop interviewing players and coaches during the course of the game.
This is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. HALFTIME IS 15 MINUTES! These fleeting minutes are as much a part of the game as the game itself.
- Would a business man want to stop and do an interview during a Power Point presentation meeting?
- Would a school teacher want to stop and give an interview during a final exam or lecture?
- In live music between sets there is usually an intense discussion with the band as to how the show is going and where we should take it. We re-hydrate, focus and pen the second set according to how the first set felt. I would not want this process interrupted.
Not one person I know who attempts to do something better than average would want their process interrupted.
We all know something that may seem small can have an immeasurable effect:
- Going left when you could go right.
- Stopping to talk to someone when you could have walked on.
- Pulling off to get gas when you could keep driving. etc.
In other words, IT DIRECTLY EFFECTS THE GAME ITSELF. There SHOULD be home court advantage, just not COMMENTATOR/LEAGUE advantage.
The pursuit of challenging yourself to perform at the best of one's ability is sacred. Pulling a professional athlete or coach from out of their zone of centeredness and focus while in the midst of this pursuit is a violation of something sacred.
The process of interviewing players and coaches while the game is still on the line is an assault on the level of focus it takes to play and coach this game at the highest level on the planet.
RATINGS.....I. GET. IT.
INTERVIEWING PLAYERS AND COACHES DURING GAMES IS NOT HELPING RATINGS.
IT IS NOT GOING TO HELP RATINGS.
(Neither is miking the coaches and players. This too is a violation of player coach privacy and an invasion of focus.)
NBA, I HAVE A LIST OF TEN CONCEPTS TO GREATLY IMPROVE RATINGS.
I will give you a couple freebies for now:
1. Have interesting and recognizable people do substantial pre-taped interviews of players to air before game and/or at halftime. And don't make it obvious pairings.
Suggestions:
- Lil Wayne interviewing Dirk Nowitzki
- Bill Gates interviewing Kobe Bryant
- Kelly Slater interviewing Lebron James, etc.
2. During playoffs, the city of each home team recruits stand out players from local high schools. The NBA then holds a high school level dunk-out and three-point shooting contest during halftime of the playoff games culminating in a final round competition taking place during pre-show and/or half time of THE NBA FINALS.
Judged by a panel of NBA greats as well as internet voting system by fans at home, one player might win the "judges panel" and another player may win the "fans panel." Most likely the same player will win both, but its a win either way!
To get the other eight concepts....(and they only get better), the NBA must first stop the process of interviewing players and coaches during the heat of the battle.
Happy New Year everybody.
Here's to an uninterrupted 2010

I like the different
I like the different definitions of resolution to kick it off- I'm sure a reader or two out there decided to turn left instead of right after opening their minds to those different angles! Thanks for that!
I couldn't agree more about the halftime interviews. Craig Sager and Cheryl Miller better stay off the stage! It kills me that people out there doing that s**t full time! (ideas for ratings, image, etc,) haven't implemented such ideas that would have an instant impact. I'd hope that the only reason we haven't seen these ideas is because of handcuffing of one sort or another, which is a whole nuther level of sad. Closed-minded decision makers? NOOOOOOOO
It's a shame that the 76ers and A.I. aren't likely to make the playoffs. The league doesn't seem quite right with him in irrelevant games. I hope time is good to the impact he's made... and I say the same for your music! Excited to hear that sound return in some form one day! Loving the ride!
Derek
PS - Hope you're ready to play in next year's All-Star celebrity game and share your ideas!
You got your wish! Shannon
You got your wish! Shannon Brown is in the Dunk Contest!!!
I have an idea for the next
I have an idea for the next post - Potential upcoming transactions and which player fits best where.
TMac is healthy for the first time in years, but he's been cast out of the Rocket locker room. Boozer has been rumored to move, but where? I've heard whispers about the Lakers trying to move Bynum to Toronto for Chris Bosh... Yow!!!
On another note - About last night on Jimmy Fallon: One of my favorite music docs is Peter Bogdonovich's RUNNING DOWN A DREAM about Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. It's just a perfect movie - I wish Tom Petty narrated stretches of my day. Anyways... Petty played with George Harrison and Ringo Starr on several occasions and albums and in different forums. Mike Campbell talks about how some of the Beatles liked the way he played, talking about those two, I presume.
Ben & R7 - You guys played with a Beatle!!! That's music. That's it. I'm not saying you guys should hang it up, but you did play with a Beatle. You might have good times to come in life, but playing with Ringo has gotta make the Top 5 list. From now on, it's gotta be: "That was a great show... sold out crowd... two encores... great fans... lovin' it... but RINGO!!!"
All right. You get my point. Last night's show was fantastic. Keep it coming in the new year. Why hasn't "Spanish Red Wine" caught on as much as the others? Love the rock - love it all - but that song is just perfect. "Kiss those dirty streets for me and tell them I'll soon be there" - that's just right on.
From the games I watch, it is
From the games I watch, it is always an assistant coach who does a half time interview, giving us absolutely no insight into what's going on. Comments like "they out played us" or "they need more energy" don't tell us very much.
A bigger concern is the invasive mic/cameras that get in with the time out huddles when they are drawing up plays or strategizing. That is something else.
As for the league, the Raptors are 7-3 in their last 10 and performing like a playoff team! One-game under .500 and 6th in the East. This is just embarassing how much division there is in the East. You have Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, and Atlanta (maybe), then a bunch of other teams struggling for a playoff spot.
Ben - love the high school slam dunk idea at half time. You want to come to Toronto and catch a game with me? I'll buy. haha.
Those interviews are
Those interviews are pointless to begin with, 99% of them are lines from Sports Quotes 101, like "We need to come out strong in the second half" or "We have to do a better job of rebounding". Of course, there are the exceptions like Steve Francis giving his thoughts right after a bad call at the end of the half that cost him $25K. Who would have thought that interviewing a player in the heat of a game would end badly?
But those interviews aren't nearly as bad as ESPN interviewing soccer coaches while play is going on.
Hey Ben! Not much of an NBA
Hey Ben!
Not much of an NBA follower but interviewing players or coaches during a game is just straight up stupid. Just looking forward to whatever you are going to throw are way this year.Looking forward, to the Ringo track, the live dvd and cd. Lay There And Hate Me is my favorite track off the album, so a video-coooool! As far as the 2 voices and guitars goes-ohh hellll yeah dude! a cd, dvd bonus,freebie-on this site, hell, pay for dl-whatever man-JUST BRING IT-:)
Hope to see you again in South Florida. The best to you and the fellas.
RC
You're absolutely right.
You're absolutely right. Those interviews are no good. They can't be good for the players' rhythm.
The game mics are all right, but the players and coaches who wear one have to be aware of it therefore affecting their performance. They have to be making a conscious effort to watch their tongue. In the heat of the game, any and everything is said, but they get a lot of PG and PC quotes.
This season is headed in the right direction. Right now, the best team in the West is the Lakers and the Cavs are best in the East. Kobe and LeBron. Who's better? That's the million dollar question.
Happy New Year ya'll.
I couldn't agree more about
I couldn't agree more about the interviewing coaches during the games. I get uncomfortable just watching those interviews. Earlier this season I saw Phil Jackson say something along the lines of "my problem is how long this interview is going to take!" It was classic Phil. Off the subject I'm glad to see my Bulls are showing some signs of life lately. D Rose is awesome to watch and Joakim Noah is doing his best impersonation of Dennis Rodman. Happy New Year everybody! I never thought I'd be spending new year's eve watching the Clippers and 76ers but hey, It's not that bad! BH, that Springsteen tribute was amazing! We dvr'd it and I'm ready to watch it again. Peace everyone.
Ben's trying to change the
Ben's trying to change the NBA for a New Year's resolution and I'm trying to quit coffee.
I know how they can get the ratings up, have Ben play more National Anthems.
Fun to find this R7 and NBA connection. It's good to be obsessed with something, get more stuff done that way.
Good luck and peace.
