Ben Harper and the innocent criminals,
had been waiting for you to come back to perth for so long, spent 5 hours waiting and got front row center, it was so worth it. Thank you so much for an unbelievably enjoyable concert. Spectactular muscial performance, as usual. Don't stop making the music!

I agree with 'Nicky P' about Ben's concert. What shat me even more was the fact that after numerous calls from the crowd he refused to play sexual healing and then, not a week later, he plays it for the kind people of newcastle. Do we who wait in paddocks not deserve the same respect as those living in castles - especially new ones.
But a kick ass show. Just a temporary.......remedy...yeh..yeh yeh

Maribel, if that is your real name, in response to your 'opinion' I'm am not bagging Ben, I am simply saying that the performance he gave in Perth was lacking the element that seperates his concerts from everyone elses. Intimacy. Its all about intimacy. Yes leather is good but in the right circumstances. I do love his music and I love hearing him sing but lose the jacket honey.

I would just like to say I had an awesome time at the concert and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. The other thing that I wanted to say is in response to 'Nicky P A B C Ben Harper Gold To Me' I think it is sad that you have nothing better to do than bag out someone you claim to be a fan of. I respect your opinion but if you are that disappointed with 'the new Ben' then switch off cos Ben has plenty of fans that love him exactly the way he is or 'becoming' if you still enjoy his music then just chill and enjoy without getting so hung up on CRAP! But that's just my opinion :)

Well, like the other 10000 people their it was a fantastic perfomance by Ben and Jack, but it was the most poorly organised event I have ever had the miss fortune to experience. What was belvoir thinking trying to let in 10000 people in 30 minutes. They are bloody lucky there wasn't a riot when Jack started playing and 75% of the crowd were still outside. We got there at 5.00pm to find a huge line already there and only got in at about 7.30pm, missing 4 of jacks songs. I sat on the phone the second the tickets went on sale, so I could experience Ben and Jack in a small intimate enviroment, then weeks later I find that the greedy promoters and organisers had gone for the big money grab and stuck the concert in a paddock and sold 7 or 8 thousand extra tickets. It was just not what I hoped to get. REFUND? Apart from greedy promoters and mindless unorganised organisers the concert was a mind blowing experience. Ben and Jack rock! I just can't help thinking how much better it would have been if it was in the amphitheatre instead of a paddock! Like it was originally going to be. Thanks Ben and Jack.

Like many others I was blown away by the performances of Jack and Ben, but at the same time extremely dissapointed with the event organisation. Realising the limited capacity of the amphithetre I purchased my tickets the morning they went on sale. After realising an extra 10 000 were made available and the event shifted to a paddock I was suitably dissapointed. To make matters worse, I missed half of Jack's set trying to get in to the place. I have written to the Belvoir to voice my disgust and would encourage the other people stuck outside to do so also.
To Ben and Jack, regardless of the venue, thanks for putting on an amazing show and please come back soon.

A super concert Ben and Jack. I had an awesome time. You both looked as though you really got into it too which got the crowd going. Although I was a little dissapointed Ben didn't play Sexual Healing and some other songs from Live From Mars but I guess that just means you will have to come back again soon. Thanks for the experience guys I won't forget it.

anonymous's picture

What can I say. Awesome, awesome show. Was a bit dissapointed missing nearly all of Jack's set, but Ben lived up to and exceeded everyones expectations. The sing along in burn one down was cool. I've always wanted to do that.
Thanks for making the night worth while. Music was PHAT.

April 6 2003 was counted down to for many, many weeks. We were one of the first people with a ticket in our hand as soon as they went on sale and ever since then we had been looking forward to one of the most amazing live acts we would ever have the privilege to see - Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and Jack Johnson.
So, imagine our annoyance when we left for our destination on April 6 only to find two and a half hours worth of bumper to bumper traffic. Imagine how frustrated we felt when it soon became apparent we would miss Jack Johnson perform.
Still we persisted.
Imagine our annoyance when we could only find a car park two kilometres away from the Belvoir Amphitheatre. Imagine our disappointment when we could no longer ignore the fact that we were not going to 'see' a thing because we would never get up close enough - when we finally got in of course.
Still, we persisted.
Our love of the music pushed us along as we walked the kilometres, lined up at the entry gates and found ourselves a little spot to listen to the music - a fair distance from what was a monster of a stage.
Let me take nothing away from the magical mysticism and funked out tunes Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals treated us to. They were truly amazing.
There were a few thousand people like me - dedicated fans who knew this concert would sell out quick, so we got in quick and we were rewarded with tickets.
We then spent the next weeks envisioning the perfect AMPHITHEATRE concert at Belvoir. Close to all the action. Close enough to see the precision picking of a guitar. Close enough to see the knowing grins that pass between musicians when the music feels 'just right'. We were going to be one of the lucky few who would be treated to, and would never forget, an awesome experience. What we were actually presented with was chaos. We missed an awesome act in Jack Johnson - thanks to the poorly organised traffic controls, thanks to the lack of notice that the concert was now going to be played to about 16,000 instead of 4,000 fans, thanks to the powers that be who decided the concert would not be staged in the amphitheatre but on a monstrous stage that certainly packed the power, but lacked greatly on the intimacy factor that BHIC and JJ are renowned for.
What we were presented with was beautiful music amongst poor management and money hungry bullshit.
If it weren't for the quality of music we heard, the whole night could have been a huge disaster.
BHIC - Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the music.

i never expected that i wouldnt enjoy the ben harper concert. i couldnt believe the mayhem and greediness that was evident at the belvoir gig. now most know what i am talking about, parting with $70 expecting to be amazed. instead, entrance dramas, a paddock instead of an ampitheatre, etc etc. and to top it off, the hill behind the fence where all my friends sat and watched it for FREE. i dont begrudge my friends (and all the other crew) on the hill, the chance to see the concert but seeing it better than i could was just harsh! missing jack johnson due to being stuck outside was a JOKE and the word 'refund' comes to mind. i just wish i had of stayed home, used the money to put a good night on at home for all my friends and be content with the CD's. the fantasy is over..

Great show by Jack.
It was a shame however to see Ben, a well accomplished musician and man being captured by mainstream popular culture. We were all expecting to see a man, his music and his love for the fans, instead we got a leather wearing, hip-hop routine which is the direction most bands seem to be heading. I don't have an issue with Ben's music, I think it is infact some of the most refreshing reggae funk blends we've heard for a long time. I do however cringe at his new image. Whether or not Ben sees it himself, in two years he has turned from his roots and soulful character and transformed himself into dare I say it...the rest.
When I go and see Ben perform in Perth, I am not expecting nor do I want to see Live From Mars, I go to see Ben and to hear his insights. I go to feel the power of his words and to become lost in his rythm. I go to be enraptured by his emotion. I was not.

We did see glimpses of the "old" Ben during his encore where you could feel the atmosphere chill down and the fans could reflect. Blessed to Be a Witness providing some new and much needed closure to an mainly loud and leather set.

So to Ben I say this, change is the direction you take when you are bored and I understand that 10 years of a particular "style" may become that way, but don't forget about the fans on your travels. They have been there and will always be there but you're treading very close to commercialism, and that is not what Ben Harper is. I am not asking you to comprimise your inspiration and churn out old school tracks, I am simply asking you to stick with being different. The day the BHIC cult becomes an MTV special because too many 15 year old girls bought tickets is the day you lose a fan.

I love your music and it remains an important part of my life. It has helped me through some of the toughest times I've faced and made be sing and dance in the happiest. Keep rocking but dont lose yourself.

Peace out!

It has to be the best live performance i have ever witnessed. The amount of live energy that was present was unbelievable. I've seen bands just jump up on stage and perform and pull off an awesome energy but ben harper and the innocent criminals appeared to be having fun at the same time which made it even better. I was about 10m from the stage so i could actually see him and his band. Juan's bass solos were impressive. The best live show i have ever seen.

brad_cannon921176's picture

I also must add that Leon Mobley was excellent on the bongos, his solo effort went for ages and was awesome.

I thought that it was a great night. The music was excellent, its not often that a band can play live as good (or better) than on cd. I think that the people who organised the concert didnt do a very good job though. We waited hours to get out and the line to get in was huge and people missed half of Jack Johnson's music. I was lucky to get in early and see the lot. But to witness Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals live and also to see Jack Johnson live made up for the lack of organisation. It was great when "Burn One Down" started and the crowd went crazy. Thanks for coming to Perth and we all hope to see Ben Harper back again soon!

anonymous's picture

the night started off pretty bad with everyone being stuck outside, missing half of jacks set. But besides that the show was the greatest thing i have ever seen. Thanks for coming Ben, come back soon.

What can I say. Not enough words can express how brilliant Ben Harper and Jack Johnson's concert was. You are a genius Ben. A truly spritial event captured by many. The memories will live with me forever. Come back soon Ben and John.

Once again I was awe struck as Ben and crew re-aligned my spine with tunes sent from the gods (Amen Omen)....I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by fans just as passionate as me and when Drugs Don't Work, Walk Alone came on, we sang and it was an experience that defies adjectives..

Yes Ben, you are Blessed - as was I to be a Witness. Thank you...and if you ever need a roadie..!

BEN HARPER AND THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS, we were fortunate enough to be in the front rows at Belvoir last night to witness this generations legends of music. With an amazing variety of what I believe have become the best songs of our time, delivered flawlesly to an audience who were lost for words no matter how high their expectations. Personaly, I've had a rough year this year, and this experience has forced my problems to disappear. I am still buzzing from last night, and this is a buz I feel will last the rest of my life, whenever I look back I will be thankful that I absorbed every second of your performance. BHTIC deliver a concert that gives feeling that can not be described or forgotten. I will see you again and again in cities all over the world, and once again be "Blessed to be a Witness". Thankyou all and take care!

It was great to see the current generation's musical maestro whose link continues the family tree that boasts such masters as Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix. The fresh injection of reggae into the live show was a pure stroke of genius. "I Shall Not Walk Alone" made the greatest transfer to a reggae format, words would not do justice to the feeling and energy conjured by that song, or the entire show for that matter. I heard the Marley tune "War" being belted out in the sound check which was a highlight in itself, but then to simply gaze in amazement as it was incorporated in the shows performance of "With My Own Two Hands", I was truly 'blessed to be a witness'. The only thing the show didn't have was a low-point, or something bad.

Magical, Amazing, Personal, Unbelievable, Fun, Fantastic, Awesome........

And soo many more amazing words describe the show last night. Way too many people in that area for the show but it was magical. Ben and his Criminals were just awesome. The crowd was just hanging on his every word. The bongo's in Steal my Kisses were my absolute highlight. Even though I loved every single minute of the concert. The new version of Excuse me Mr is excellent. With Juan grooving away and Ben dancing!! my night could not have been any better, then Leon started grooving too.

Wow what an awe inspiring experience. The last concert Ben played at Belvoir was unbelievably amazing but this was a totally different experience both excelllent!

i was totally blown away. at first i was pretty disappointed when an extra 18000 tickets were released after the first 3000,and the concert was in the paddock and not the amphitheatre, but that didn't matter in the end. the concert was awesome. it was surreal being there, and i loved being surrounded by fans that love BHTIC as much as i do. it looked like ben put as much into this concert as any other, even though we are just a small city. when the whole crowd sang along to drugs don't work it was amazing. the only thing i would have loved to see was ben on the lap steel in flake, but that didn't really matter. i got more than my moneys worth. every song was so much better than on my CDs, making ben harper and the innocent criminals the best live act. it makes the experience so much better when you can see that the musicians are having as good a time as the fans. i was stoked when burn one down was played, that really lit the crowd up, and i've always wanted to experience that song live. my words can't do justice to how great the concert was, but i loved it!!!
