04.25.12 DHANI HARRISON'S THENEWNO2 ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM FEATURING BEN HARPER
thenewno2 announces the release of their second full-length album, thefearofmissingout, on July 31 via H.O.T. Records Ltd. The album was produced by pHd, the moniker for band members and Grammy Award winners Dhani Harrison and Paul Hicks, and recorded in both Los Angeles and London.
Following their debut album You Are Here (2009), primarily written and recorded by Harrison, thefearofmissingout is the first recording as a band featuring Harrison, Hicks, Jonathan Sadoff, Jeremy Faccone, Nick Fyffe and Frank Zummo.
Employing a combination of live and programmed instruments and adding in obscure samples to create an intricate collage of electronica sounds, the sonic textures in thefearofmissingout were enhanced by Harrison as well as guest vocalists RZA, Ben Harper, The Black Knights, Throunn Antonia (Fields, Beck's Record Club) and Holly Marilyn (The Child).
The fear of missing out is the title and driving concept behind the album. To Harrison, everything in life boils down to FOMO. "Everyone suffers from it in a different way," he says. "We all have a fear of missing out on something." The result is an album with a multitude of themes, including avoiding change and of course fear.
Combining their inventive sounds with creative visuals, thenewno2 recruited notable London street artist Ben Eine to design the album art for the new project. Known for his prolific typography in his own trademark colors, Eine reached international fame when David Cameron presented one of his works to President Obama as a gift on his first official state visit.

Ben Harper has cast his MVP Vote

Over the last couple of seasons, we've been lucky enough to strike up a friendship with Grammy Award winning musician/die-hard Lakers fan Ben Harper. He's been a frequent guest on the podcast, talking hoops and music (including this really cool conversation about cover songs, and another about Marvin Gaye's iconic anthem) and we'll often get emails from him before, during and after games. Following the win over Miami Sunday afternoon, like a lot of Lakers loyalists, he was pretty fired up. This landed in my inbox, and for anyone looking to put into perspective the sort of season Kobe Bryant is having, Harper does a pretty good job:
"Today's Lakers is the team no one wants to face in a seven game series.
So lemme get this straight:
He gets his nose broken AND a concussion and STILL goes out and breaks Jordan's all time record of total points scored in all-star game history... mind you in the EXACT same number of all-star appearances, 14....THEN comes back not missing a game or practice and scores over 30 per game in the next 3 games whilst wearing a MASK still with a broken nose, all the while leading the league in scoring in his mid 30's!?

PodKast w/Ben Harper: Lakers, Kobe and the art of cover songs
By Andy Kamenetzky
ESPN.com
It's always fun when friend-of-the-podKast, two-time Grammy winner and die hard Laker fan Ben Harper visits the studio. We sat down for an extended conversation about the state of the Los Angeles Lakers (Ben's a little worried) and, of course, music. The show was broken into two sections -- Part I and Part II can be heard in the entirety here -- http://espn.go.com/espnradio/losangeles/play?id=7507661 & here -- http://espn.go.com/espnradio/losangeles/play?id=7507712&s=la
and the breakdowns can be found below.
Part I
- (3:10): Ben expresses concerns about this team. For starters, Harper has concerns about the championship viability of a team featuring two seven foot players. As he notes, Mike Brown has talked about using Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum the way Tim Duncan and David Robinson were used in during the Spurs' title runs, but that's also the last time we've seen that work. Playing the averages, is this really a winning formula?
- (7:25): Ben's also concerned Brown's emphasis on hellbent-for-leather defense 48 minutes a game is inspirational in theory, but too draining in practice. Having said that, he's actually confident Kobe Bryant can maintain this pace and production over the next 47 games, despite this season's wrist injury and last season's knee/ankle problems. Watching him play like the dude wearing the #8 jersey has made the stretches of ugly offense a kick to watch.
- (9:37): The hiring of Brown was met with a mixed reception from the Laker Nation. Count Ben among those thrilled by the Buss' hire.
- (15:13): Kobe walks a high-wire act each game as the Lakers' scorer and primary play-maker, and Ben feels for the superstar as he carries that burden. "He's brought us five rings, and to this day, the city can't decide if they him to shoot or pass," laughs Harper. In the meantime, Ben wants to see the German doc for his own knees. There's nothing wrong with knees, but seeing Kobe bounce up and down the court this season, why not?
- (18:25): We recorded this show hours before Wednesday Lakers-Clippers game, a contest that featured some animosity between the teams. Mention of the Clips also got a rise of out "Ben Harper the Laker fan." Between a dynamic he describes as "Yankees-Mets" and the local reminder Chris Paul should have been a Laker, let's just say the Clips won't be receiving complimentary copies of "Fight for your Mind" anytime soon.
PART II, where we talk music, and specifically, the art of recording a cover song:
- (1:15): "Covers have a way of finding you," Ben explains. Sometimes you'll hear them from friends or randomly on the radio. Other times, you'll be asked to take part in a soundtrack, as was the case when Ben recorded the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever." It was requested he keep it very close to the original, which provided the challenge of remaining faithful to the employer while adding his own stamp.
- (3:49): Aretha Franklin is the artist Harper considers probably the most unapproachable artist to cover, at least as a singer. Her voice is just "untouchable," as he puts it. However, he'd love to do an album of Franklin cuts with a steel guitar serving as her vocals. I'd listen to that.
- (9:40): How much responsibility do you feel to the artist when covering one of their songs? Ben shares how David Ritz, who co-wrote "Sexual Healing" with Marvin Gaye, went out of his way to contact him and compliment his version of the classic. "You'd like to do a version that the author would respect," says the singer.
- (13:30): It turns out, all three of us share the favorite cover song: "All Along the Watchtower," by Jimi Hendrix. It's so incredible and iconic, most people forget there even was an original version. And by the way, the original was done by Bob Dylan, certainly no slouch himself. Hendrix's version managed to make Dylan's basically irrelevant, a testament to the greatness he (re)created.
- (17:21): During a tribute to Jackson Browne, Ben performed "Ohio" in front of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. No pressure.
- (23:51): True story, verified by my own eyes: Brian once met Eric Clapton at a laundry mat near The Beverly Center. The man once nicknamed "God" was doing his own wash with a roll of quarters. Rock stars, they're just like us!!! Brian also met B.B. King another time at LAX. Guitar legends apparently gravitate towards my brother.

George Harrison's guitars? There's an app for that
Beatles, solo guitars - a virtual showroom
Joe Bosso, Tue 17 Jan 2012
Want to drool over George's Harrison's most famous guitars? His Gretsch Duo Jet? His Fender "Rocky" Stratocaster? What about his Rickenbacker 360/12, his Fender rosewood Telecaster and many others? If the answer is yes, you'll be able to soon, because as the saying goes, "There's an app for that."
Called The Guitar Collection: George Harrison, the iPad app, produced by the George Harrison estate and Bandwdth Publishing, offers 360-degree pictures of the guitars the ex-Beatle played on iconic Fab Four recordings, live shows, and in his solo work.
According to a press release, fans will be able to explore "the scratches, dings and worn threads as if they themselves were holding the instruments."
The history of each guitar is laid out in great detail, including the origin of the instrument, when and how it became part of Harrison's collection, modifications, and why each was so important in creating his distinctive sound. Through audio, this virtual showroom will also catalogue how each guitar was used on specific tracks.
The video app contains footage of artists such as Ben Harper, Josh Homme, Mike Campbell and Harrison's son, Dhani Harrison, each playing and showcasing the guitars and exploring their feel and tone. In addition, TV personality and guitar aficionado Conan O'Brien sits down with Dhani to discuss what make these guitars so exceptional.
The app is priced at $9.99 USD and will be available at the Apple App Store on 23 February.
You can preview the app right here: http://vimeo.com/user9732995/review/35123541/81f34e90df%20
