Byron Bay Bluesfest

Ben's eleventh year and eighteenth Bluesfest appearance on the 30th anniversary of the esteemed festival included sit-ins with Mavis Staples and Kasey Chambers, a headlining performance with The Innocent Criminals O.G. trio, and guest appearances during their set by Chambers and Jack Johnson.

In the midafternoon he sat-in with Mavis Staples on the Jambalaya stage and traded verses on "Love And Trust" and "We Get By," both originals he penned for her previous album "Livin' On A High Note" and her upcoming album "We Get By" (out May 24 on ANTI- Records), respectively. Then in the early evening he joined Kasey Chambers on the Crossroads stage for his song "Another Lonely Day," a song she had covered years ago and naturally they would do together.

During his set with The Innocent Criminals on the Mojo stage, he played a mix of career-spanning songs including those from different lineups, like "I Don't Believe A Word You Say" and "The Bottle Wins Again" with Charlie Musselwhite and "Keep It Together (So I Can Fall Apart)" from Relentless7. He also introduced two new covers: "Who Is He (And What Is He To You?)" by Bill Withers and "Machine Gun" by Jimi Hendrix.

Midway through the set, Kasey Chambers came out and again sang "Another Lonely Day" this time singing different verses than they had during her set. Instead of her taking the first verse as she did earlier on her stage, Ben took first then her second, etc.

Then a few songs later Jack Johnson came up and they played "With My Own Two Hands." The pair have collaborated many times over the years through music and activism, including most recently with BYOBottle, a music industry campaign to rock reusable water bottles. Learn more at www.byobottle.org.
