In the midst of recording a new album, Ben Harper took a break to play a sold out benefit show to raise funds for Youth Speaks. An innovative group of young people, Youth Speaks "is building the next generation of leaders through the written and spoken word." Three of its members christened the night with freestyle spoken word and poetry. After a short break, Patrick Brayer started his set of Catholic and Western Fabuli on the acoustic and lap slide guitars. During his 45 minute set, Brayer credited the Inland Empire as the home to three of the best slide guitar players in the business: David Lindley, Chris Darrow, and Ben. Brayer finished his set and was followed by three more spoken word performances....Soon the anticipation turned to admiration as the crowd cheered while the man of the evening soon took the stage. Harper's well-mixed set of standards represented at least every album, including a brand new song with special guest Leon Mobley on percussion called "When It's Good". Mobley - who also played on "The Woman In You", "Burn One Down", a highlight version of "Like a King/I'll Rise" and "Sexual Healing" - wasn't the only guest of the evening. Brayer sat it with his fiddle on "In The Lord's Arms" and "I Shall Not Walk Alone"....Harper's standout performance was credit to the audience, an amazingly respectful and silent legion of dedicated fans and followers.
